Nailsworth Names and Items of Interest

Compiled by Graham Thomas
Master Index

Introduction
Nailsworth is a town adjacent to Woodchester, originally part of the parish of Avening but becoming a seperate parish in 1892.
Its history is much older: the Romans built an alter in the area for example and Nailsworth was an important part of the wool industry from the fifteenth century onwards. However, Nailsworth's prosperity as a thriving and growing village (and later town) started in the seventeenth century.
An excellent history of Nailsworth has been written by Betty Mills and I have largely taken the first table of names from her book 'A Portrait of Nailsworth.'
She has noted in her book that in the mid-nineteenth century there was a significant amount of emigration to Australia, New Zealand and also America.
Secondly, I have included the Census information from 1851 which is part of the mammoth project undertaken by Gordon Beavington.
The third item of interest is a summary of the deeds for property in the Newmarket area of Nailsworth.
Nailsworth was a seperate manor from that of Avening in the fifteenth century when it was leased by the Hyett family. In Paynes 'History of Minchinhampton and Avening' he records the following:
'James Hyett, of Lydney, who was Constable of St Briavels Castle in 1471 and who was in the latter years collector of tenths and land tax, is described in the Polls Receipt Roll of lately been the owner of the Manor of Nailsworth. He had recently made it over to his son Roger, who died during his father's lifetime, Oct 20th 1478. At the "inquistiones post mortem" held respecting Roger's property it was found he held a lease of the Manor of Naylesworth form the Monastry of S. Saviour of Zion, and that his brother Thomas, who was then 14 was heir. The manor descended to Thomas until his death on Feb 20th 1543. He left a son James, to whom the lease of the Manor of Nailsworth passed. James had a son, Charles, and a grandson, Richard, who joined together in selling their interest in the Manor and three messauges in Naylesworth and Minchinhampton to Henry Lord Windsor, for the sum of 200 pounds.'

Property Deeds for cottages in Newmarket
The first indenture is dated 1696 and has been slightly nibbled around the
edges by rodents. In this document a piece of land was transferred from
William FOWLER, the younger, mason of Minchinhampton and Rebecca his wife,
Richard WEBB and Edward WEBB of Horsley, clothiers and Mary COXE of
Cherington, spinster to Nathaniel MILLWATERS, broadweaver. There was a
provision that Nathaniel could take stone from the quarry on Bunting Hill to
build cottages.

Nathaniel transferred the property to Thomas, his son, in 1705.

In the next document a wall was built between the property of Thomas and
that of Rebecca. The will of Thomas gave the house where Samuel TEAKLE lived,
presumably his tenant, to his wife Mary and then to his son, Richard. The
other house, where Grace HILLIER lived was to go to his daughter, Mary. John
TEAKLE'S house was to go to his daughter, Hannah. So there were three
dwellings involved. (No date for the will noted.)

In 1761 Richard Millwaters sold the cottage where William CLARK lived, the
one with the court, to J. WATTS.

1798 the dwelling house, court and garden which was in possession of William
WATTS ( and MILLWATERS) was transferred to HILLIER and GUY.
[Thomas MILLWATERS, of Minchinhampton, carrier; Willam WATTS of Stinchcombe,
labourer; Joseph HILLIER of Newmarket, carrier; Joseph GUY of Newmarket,
rugmaker.]

1799 Joseph HILLIER transferred his property to Thomas CLIFT, clothier. In
another deed, also 1799,  Messrs WILKINS and BROOKS transferred property to
Thomas CLIFT. [ William WILKINS of Richmond, Surrey, gent; John WILKINS of
Cirencester, woolstapler; Caleb BROOKS of Horsley, broadweaver; Joseph
Hillier, carrier, Thomas CLIFT, clothier.] Also mentioned are Mary STIBBS who
married Samuel PEGLAR.

1818 Thomas CLIFT conveyed the property to William GAZZARD, weaver. James
WINDOW also possessed part of the property at this time and part was in a
ruinous condition.

1835 William GAZZARD to Samuel GAZZARD, both weavers. Thomas POOL, William
WOODLANDS and James DAUNCEY lived in one property. On one side they had Mary
COTTLE and on the other side Daniel HEAVEN.

1843 John GAZZARD of Dunkirk, Minchinhampton, mason; John C. TABRAM,
Nailsworth, auctioneer on one part conveyed the property to Isaac HILLIER,
gent.
The occupiers were now Joseph BRINKWORTH and Jesse TUNLEY.
1882 Joseph SAWYER to John SAWYER, properties which had been in occupation of
John HESKINS and Thomas HESKINS, since of Mssrs CREED and WILKINS and now of
William CREED and William HEAVEN. The shed at the back was used by Hilliers
Bacon Curing Company.

1883 Isaac HILLIER to John SAWYER. After Joseph BRINKWORTH and Jesse TUNLEY
the occupants were John MARSHMAN, Mrs MARSHMAN and MRS DAUNCEY. There was another property also belonging to John SAWYER next door.

1888 John SAWYER, formerly of Newmarket, clerk, now of Trowbridge, bacon
curer and Ernest Emery SAUNDERS.........refers back to an indenture of 1754
made between Joseph HESKINS and William SANIGEAR.

1909  Indenture between Ernest Emery SAUNDERS, butcher of Nailsworth and
Grace Margaret NIBLETT of Bristol, dwelling house and Post Office, formerly
in occupation of Albert Alexander JONES, now in occupation of John William
NIBLETT. The cottage in occupation of Henry CREED and George ROBINSON was now
in occupation of Mssrs PERKINS and BINGLE.
