Marriages at Nimpsfield: 1679-1756 & Census 1851 |
Marriages: 1679-1756
There are a number of marriages that took place in Nimpsfield during
this period where one or both parishioners were from the parish of Woodchester;
rather less frequent are parishioners from Kings Stanley. After 1756, all
the marriages were of local people.
Nimpsfield Church is a simple country church with much charm and serenity.
The Tower is 14th Century Perpendicular but the main body of the church
was built in 1861-1863 by S. S. Teulon.
There are some dramatic gargoyles and the west doorway has a tudor
arch. The graveyard is quite large and a number of older inscriptions are
easily read. Having walked around the church a drink at the very pleasant
Rose and Crown in the village is recommended.

NOTE:- The first volume is parchment and is described as having
been bought by Garrat
Shillam and John Pearce, Churchwardens. As no earlier
register exists, and this one is
described as made "by an order from the Reverend
Mr. Richard Parsons, Chancellor of
Gloucester", it seems probable that registration
had previously been neglected in this
parish. This first volume contains also baptisms
and burials and a terrier of the glebe lands.
Many of the marriages recorded were of people not
resident in the parish. It will be
observed also, that the absurd spelling "Nymphsfield,"
from a fancied association of the
name with "Nymph" derives no authority from the
most ancient register extant of the parish.
The cloth working industry has long departed from
the village, but the entries in the registry
prove that it once flourished here. This transcript
has been prepared by the Rev. James
Silvester, Rector of Nimpsfield, and is now printed
by his permission.
