Rodborough Church, Monumental Inscriptions. Compiled by Graham Thomas |
These inscriptions
are taken from Gloucestershire Notes and Queries and Rudders
History of Gloucestershire.
The first volume of Gloucestershire Notes and
Queries was published in 1881,
edited by Rev. Beaver H. Blacker, M.A. The notes
below are taken from this
volume, and the spelling and grammar are as the
original. The surnames have
been put in capitals to aid identification.
In the original book the information was provided
either in separate alphabetical
tables, split according to the location of the
inscription within the church, or in
the form of transcripts of the original inscription.
This information has been
condensed into a single table, with the right
hand column referring to the location
details as noted in the original book.
This list does not cover all memorial inscriptions
at Rodborough Church, because
it was compiled in 1879, and also because it
concentrated on the inscriptions
within the church.
In Rudder's History of Gloucestershire, published
in1779 he describes the church thus:
'The church lies in the deanery of Stonehouse,
and is a chapel of ease to Minchin Hampton, to which it is annexed. The
rector of Hampton, by a decree in chancery in the reign of King James the
First, is obliged to provide a curate to officiate in this chapel...
The church is dedicated to St Mary Magdalen.
It has an aile in the south side, and a pinnacled tower at the west end.
I have included below the Monuments and Inscriptions
recorded by Rudder.

STANFIELD, Jacobus, A.M., Praelector
| In Rudders book, he describes the monument to Jacobus
Stanfield:
At the east end of the church is a monument to Doctor Stanfield, the greatly respected lecturer of this parish, and rector of Woodchester, who left behind him a great reputation, and whose memory is still revered in these parts. Under his influence and direction, the clothiers of this parish and neighbouring bottoms, by their contributions in cloth and money, intirely clothed the regiment raised by Sir John Guise, at the revolution in 1688. On the monument is the following inscription: Under this place lies James Stanfield A.M. A faithful Preacher of God's word in this and the neighbouring church of Woodchester. A man of rare wit and uncommon learning. A profound divine. An incomparable Catechist and a most excellent Physician: Who, tho' he lived to a great age, may very justly be said to have died too soon; since his death must always be untimely whose pious labours make his life a blessing and his memory great. Died Dec. 25, 1722. Translated from the Latin inscription |

Rudder also makes the following notes about tombs
in the churchyard:

Until its restoration Rodborough Church was a
good example of the common practise of buying and selling pews. Those who
were authorised to erect galleries and pews for their occupation claimed
them as their freehold within the church fixing them with a brass plate
that would record something like "This pew is the property of..."
Samuel Shurmer in 1733; Peter Playne in 1748
are two examples.
