Selsley Census 1851

Master Index

When this Census was taken Selsley was still part of Kings Stanley. This extract picks up the inhabitants of what became the Selsley parish. It has been taken from the superb on-line census work done by Gordon Beavington. There is a link to his page at the bottom if you wish to explore the whole census for Kings Stanley or elsewhere in Gloucestershire.
As you go through the names a  number of things stand out:
*Many of the workers are involved with the cloth industry. Not surprising. There are very few people employed in agriculture. This is because a lot of the farms were open grazing for sheep which is not labour intensive.
*A common myth is that villages were made up of families who had lived there for generations.
Even in this early census you will note how many heads of households were in fact born outside of Kings Stanley. Migration was frequent.
*Common names include Herbert (the most frequent), Dangerfield and Smith.
*Note the various Harrison families all involved with the building trade. They were responsible for building Selsley and Woodchester churches.
