Paul Hawkins Fisher
When Notes and Recollections of Stroud was first published in 1871, the author, Paul Hawkins Fisher, was over 90 years old and had lived in Stroud all his life. It was his own memories, extending back to the 1780s that provided the basis if his history.
During his lifetime, Stroud had grown from a small but prosperous Cotswold town to a vigorous Victorian business centre at the heart of the woollen industry.
Fisher's father was Benjamin Fisher, a currier, who came to Stroud from Gloucester in 1763, the year that he married Margaret White, daughter of a Newent tanner. They had eleven children, all but two of them boys. Most of his brothers went in to trade in Stroud or the neighbouring towns and villages: two as curriers, another as a grocer, another as a malster. Paul became an attorney, forming a partnership with another brother.
Paul Fishers' first wife Janet Travers died young and secondly he married Anne Colbourne of an old established Stroud family.
Probably both through the marriage and his success as an attorney he became quite prosperous: he became an owner of a mill at Woodchester for example.
Not surprisingly he became involved in town affairs, working on various committees but he also wrote about the history of the town for the Stroud Journal which eventually led to his writing his book.

Parish Registers for Stroud
The parish registers start in 1624 and are headed "Register book of the Christenings Burrialls and Marriages performed in the Chapple of Stroud and entered from the latter end of the year of our Lord God Anno dni 1624; as followeth. The first entry was for a baptism on Feb. 27th which, with the eclesiastical system used, was said to be at the end of the year as the year ran from 25th March.
Inevitably there are blanks and breaks in the continuity.
Fisher notes some specific entries which are of interest or peculiar:
"John Brownen and Mary Bennat proclaimed to be married the nommannaten was the 16th day of novenber 1655 the 2 day was the 23 november the 3 proclaimen was that of 30 november 1655"
"Thomas Harcut and Margary Dunn being published 3 marcut daies in the town of Painswicke ware mared by Mr John Lygon, Juste of the pease the 7 day of August 1656 according to the late Ackte."

Church Monuments
The old church of St Lawrence no longer exists as it was pulled down and replaced in the 19th century. The original church's origin was in the early 1300s and it seemed it was never considered a particularly grand church.
Fisher records a number of monuments including:
