Descendants of Thomas Thomas
First Generation
1. Thomas Thomas was born c. 1790, we think in the parish of
Gresford, Wales. The reason for the uncertainty is that untangling the
Thomas surnames in the Parish Records is nigh on impossible. The Thomas
surname is present in the parish from at least c. 1650, within three families
and then multiplies thereafter.
There is a Thomas Thomas born in 1786, son of Thomas in the LLay area
of the Parish; another Thomas born in 1790, son of William (but thereafter
the William name is not present in the family) and a Thomas, son of Thomas
in 1804 (but I think born late).
We know that the Thomas we are interested in married Mary (?). Within
the records I have seen thus far the only marriage between a Thomas and
Mary is that of Thomas Thomas to Mary Davies in April 1809. However, I
haven't seen later records and this marriage seems early.
Thomas was noted as a mill wright in the PRs (although this has also
been transcribed as a mule wright). Just to note that the mill was in Llay.
2. George Thomas was his youngest son,
born 1 we believe in Sept.
1825 in Gresford, Flint, Wales to Thomas and Mary. In the parish records,
the siblings of George were most likely:
(Maybe Peter, born 1815)
Thomas, born 1816
Mary, 1819
Harriet, born 1821
Sarah, born 1823.
George was employed as a Dock Labourer 1861 in Liverpool. He was employed
as a Labourer in the 1881 census but could afford a live-in servant.
[Notes]
George married Mary Quinlan. (As of yet no
marriage certificate has been located but we know from the census records
that she was born in Ireland in c. 1822.)
They had the following children:
In the 1851 Census (when living at 20 Jones Street):
John, born 1848 in Beverley, N. Yorks.
Jane, born 1851, in Liverpool.
In the 1861 Census (now 10 Jones Street):
John, born 1848, now aged 13 and a Apprenticed Carpenter.
Anne, born in 1850, in Liverpool. There is no mention of Jane.
George, born 3 June 1853, at 48 Jones Street, Toxteth, Liverpool.
(Birth Certificate).
Mary Ellen, born in 3rd September, 1856 at 10 Jones Street.
(Birth Certificate).
Martha J. Cowan, born in 1857 and recorded as a daughter.
In the 1871 Census (living at 14 Markham Street):
George is now 17 a French Polisher
Mary Ellen is 14 and still a scholar
They have a lodger, Hannah Buckham, an unmarried 47 year old
Charwoman. (Interestingly in the 1881 census she is recorded as Ann
Blackhouse, still unmarried but now seems to work for the family as
a servant. Shows how the Census can be unreliable).
