Martha was born 1 17 Mar 1854 in 17 Sands Street South, Liverpool. (At the time of the marriage she was living at 9 Ouse Street along with her father and brother John. Her father is noted as a widower in the 1871 census so his wife Martha had obviously died by then. Brother John - a mariner - married Hannah Smith in 1885.)
