Reading the census, it is
easy to see the domination of the woollen industry in the village - although
this was now in its phase of final decline and other small scale maufacturing
industries were begining to move in to the mills. (These included tinplate
manufacturing and pin making). Nonetheless, many hand loom
workers lived in the village, most of whom were still likely to have worked
from home, engaging the whole family in this cottage industry. The Woodchester Census is
divided in to two section I and II. SECTION I All that Part of the Parish
of Woodchester lying to the North of the leading from Nailsworth to the
Stroud Road, passing Churches Mill to the Turnstyle on Selsley Hill,
including part of Bospen Lane and the Houses at Selsley Hill. SECTION II All that Part of the Parish
of Woodchester Lying on the South of the Road leading from the Nailsworth and
Stroud Road passing Churches Mill to the Turnstyle on Selsley Hill including part
of Bospen Lane, Woodchester Mansion Park Gate, Frogmarsh, Summerwell &
